Product Description

Rice is one of the world’s most important agricultural commodities and a staple food for more than half the global population. It is traded internationally as a bulk commodity (primarily milled white rice, with smaller volumes of paddy/rough rice, brown rice, and specialty varieties) and plays a critical role in food security, especially across Asia, Africa, and parts of Latin America.

Global Production & Major Producers

Annual global production typically exceeds 500–520 million metric tons of paddy (unmilled) rice, equivalent to roughly 340–350 million tons of milled rice. Asia accounts for ~90% of world output. The top producers are:

  • China – largest producer (roughly 145–150 million tons paddy).
  • India – second-largest and the world’s biggest exporter in recent years.
  • Indonesia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Philippines.

Outside Asia, significant production occurs in Brazil, the United States (mainly Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi), Egypt, Nigeria, and parts of West Africa. Most rice is consumed in the country where it is grown; only about 8–10% of global production enters international trade.

Types & Grades Traded

Long-grain (most of the international trade volume) – preferred in many markets for its separate, fluffy cooked texture. Medium- and short-grain – important in East Asia, parts of the U.S., and specialty markets. Parboiled rice – steamed before milling; popular in parts of Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. Broken rice – lower-priced grades used for food aid, animal feed, or further processing. Specialty and premium segments: fragrant/aromatic varieties (Thai Hom Mali / Jasmine, Indian Basmati), organic, and colored rices (red, black, purple).
